Sofia's rich culture and history, with many historical remains from the Thracian, Hellenic, and Roman cultures, make it a fascinating destination for visitors.
The country's early Christian monasteries are particularly noteworthy, with the most majestic one - the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila (known as Rila Monastery), founded in the 10th century - preserving the Bulgarian spirit and literacy.

Sofia is an excellent choice for the EMA headquarters, with a modern, tolerant, and rapidly developing society. With 62% of the population at working age (25-64) and 60% of the workforce proficient in more than one foreign language, Sofia has a diverse pool of talented professionals. The flat 10% corporate and personal tax rates are an attractive advantage for businesses and individuals alike.
The Bulgarian government's decision to nominate Sofia demonstrates the country's positive outlook despite economic challenges over the past decade. The relocation of the EMA to Sofia will showcase the EU's ability to make crucial decisions based on objective criteria, further strengthening the Union's ties with Bulgaria.
Sofia's excellent transport accessibility and amenities are also key factors in the city's selection as a potential EMA headquarters. Sofia Airport serves 83 international destinations, with an annual growth rate of 36% in the number of international passengers. Sofia's metro links the airport with the city center for less than one euro, and a taxi ride costs only 5-10 euros. With two seas - the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea in Greece - and the best golf courses in Eastern Europe, Sofia is an attractive destination for business and leisure. The city has over 12,000 hotel rooms at various price levels, making it an ideal location for international events such as the EMA.
The future EMA headquarters will be part of the Technology + Innovative Network (T+IN) in Sofia, a strategic project of the Bulgarian government and the EU, focused on high-tech development, innovations, life sciences and health research, biotech, green energy, and technologies. T+IN offers state-of-the-art infrastructure and laboratory equipment available to established high-tech companies and start-ups, promoting high technology innovations and applicable science in Bulgaria.
The EMA headquarters will be fully operational by the relocation date, but no later than January 1st, 2019. The building will have a total built-up area of over 30,000 square meters and can expand up to 40,000 square meters in the future.
The relocation process will be managed by a special international committee of relocation professionals and volunteers to ensure that the EMA's work is not disrupted. Bulgaria also provides a network of international schools with excellent standards, and under EU law, the children of EMA employees will be granted free-of-charge access to state and municipal schools.
